Week #24 - Finally, some problems

This week seemed like a headache as soon as the ringing phone woke us up Monday morning.  We started off by canceling all our plans to visit Nicaragua and El Salvador in order to schedule an installation for next week.  The best news that day was we got a car, finally!  But then it broke on Tuesday in an amazing series of chain events.  Apparently, the inspection place didn't bolt down the battery, which slid into the motor pulley, broke the belt that powered the brakes and caused the engine to overheat, and wore a hole in the battery, draining all the water so it didn't hold a charge; all in the middle of nowhere.  We did manage to make it to El Recreo and conduct our first introduction though.  This is when we talk with the community leaders about the water filters and all decide if they even want or need them.  We felt the water board and community leaders were supportive enough so we took a water sample and scheduled to return for a socialization on the 29th.  This is when at least one person from each of the 82 houses comes to our presentation about the filter and why health and clean water are so important.  The rest of the week we spent at the workshop inspecting the filters.  There is a lot of work to do here with a failure rate of 40%, 4 out of 10 filters are leaking.  But we did manage to get filter #001 painted and into the yard; ready to be shipped to El Recreo.

We discover a hole in our battery and need to pop-the-clutch to start the car

Just a few more people than we planned for

We were working so hard, even the locals were tired, or maybe drunk?

Only seventy-five more 300lb filters to move Jeff.

Week #23 - Back to work

Back to work, as soon as Rasa turned on her phone she was getting a call.  Our plane departed late, which meant we arrived in the morning at San Pedro Sula .  We decided to just stay in the airport and wait for Jeff and Jenilou to arrive at 2pm.  They will be in Honduras during the winter break, helping out and learning the joys of development work.  We made it back to La Ceiba Tuesday night, just in time for our meeting with Maria.  On Wednesday, we showed up to the taller to see no work had been done over Christmas.  They told us they never got paid and as we later found out on Thursday, they just didn't pick up their check.  Today is January 10th and the people from MAMUCA are still on vacation, it's a very relaxed country.  Then on Friday, I got my tooth pulled in order to put on my bottom braces.  That had me out for the weekend while Jeff and Jen went to Roatan.

This lady had 2 carts of luggage and no one else to help her

Poor Ornan, he didn't get Christmas money to buy tamales

I feel just like a local now

Week #22 - Happy New Year!

We spent the big day at Rasa's parents' house celebrating with her sisters and their families.  On Tuesday we drove up to Carolyn's house in Vermont, where we got our dusting of snow.  A white Christmas is always nice, especially when you don't need to dig out your car.  Wednesday, we were cooking all day and preparing for our welcome party that night.  It was great to have so many people drive up there to visit us.  Thank you.  On Friday we went into NYC to do some shopping and have a business lunch with Byron.  It seemed like everyone was also doing the same thing.  And then on Sunday we played scrabble and fell asleep before New Year's.  We're so wild.   And by New Year's Day we were still without our computer

Merry Christmas!

Hooray for a white one

And then there were the returns and after Christmas sales
